Therion, İsveçli Death/Senfonik Metal topluluğudur.

Kuruluşu 1990'ın da ötesinde olan Therion'un tarzı gerçekten oldukça özel... Metalin içindeki seslerden daha benzersiz ve daha özgün sesleri yaratmaya çalışan bu İsveçli grup, senfonik öğeleri, opera tadındaki vokalleri ve Orta Çağ'a özgü koroların mükemmel uyumunu kullanarak klasik metal ve gotik kavramlarını birlikte işleyerek ortaya büyüleyici bir tarz çıkarıyor.

Grubun tarihi , 1987 yılında Blitzkrieg adlı grubun kurulmasıyla başlar, sözü geçen grup Christofer Johnsson adlı vokalist, gitaris ve besteci kişilik tarafından İsveçte Stokholm kenti yakınlarında kurulmuştur. Blitzkrieg grubunun ilk kadrosunda Christofer Johnsson bas gitar, Peter Hansson gitar ve Oskar Forss davul çalıyordu.

Blitzkrieg grubunun yaptığı müziğe değinmek gerekirse;genellikle Motörhead,Venom,Slayer ve Metallica gibi Heavy Metal ve Black Metal öncü gruplarının etkisinde kaldığını söyleyebiliriz.

Blitzkrieg grubu tüm bu kadrosuna rağmen sadece iki kere konser verebilmiş ve hiç demo kayıt yapamamıştır.Zaten 1988 yılında;grup üyeleri dağılma kararı almış,ve grup tarihten silinmiştir.

Blitzkrieg'in dağılmasından bir kaç ay sonra,Chris gitara geçmiş ve Peter Hansson ile birlikte yeniden çalışmaya başlamıştır.Kurulan bu yeni grubun adının Megatherion olmasını kararlaştırdıktan sonra,Gothic Metal öncülerinden sayılan Celtic Frost grubunun müziğinden ilham alarak müzik yapmaya başladılar.Aradan biraz zaman geçtiğinde ise Oskar tekrar gruba döndü ve eski Blitzkrieg kadrosu tamamlanmış oldu.Fakat şimdi tek eksik bir bas gitaristti,bu eksiği de Dismember adlı İsveçli Death Metal grubunda çalan Erik Gustafsson adlı basçıyla giderdiler.Tüm bunlar olduktan sonra grubun ismi Therion olarak değiştirildi ve grup müzik hayatına başladı.
